The updating system (including the foss-update.php script) was replaced when we released 0.5.X. Versions older than it can't perform the auto update step when making the jump to 0.5.X.
Going forward, use domain.com/run-patcher to manually call the update patcher, your copy of foss-update.php is outdated and won't get updates as we don't use it anymore. The patcher will migrate the database and bring it's structure up-to-date (and therefore resolve the error you are seeing now).
Note: as long as everything works correctly, you shouldn't need to worry about manually calling the patcher going forward as the 0.5.X changes also resolved a previous issue where the patcher would frequently not run when performing automatic updates.
